Overview of Ms Tzafetta’s specialist approach
Care for facial palsy and facial paralysis requires more than technical skill. It calls for careful listening, clinical judgement and a deep understanding of how facial movement affects daily life, confidence and identity. Kalliroi Tzafetta approaches facial reanimation with this wider perspective -her work centres on supporting meaningful facial movement and balance while respecting each person’s individual journey.

A background rooted in reconstructive care
Ms Tzafetta is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon within the NHS, based at the St Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford. In this role, she treats patients requiring complex reconstructive surgery following cancer treatment, trauma and burns. This NHS practice underpins her approach to facial reanimation. Decisions focus on safety, long-term function and realistic outcomes, rather than on procedures alone.
Alongside her NHS work, Ms Tzafetta provides specialist facial reanimation care for people living with facial palsy and paralysis, whether caused by nerve injury, illness, surgery, or congenital conditions.
Specialist training in facial paralysis and microsurgery
Ms Tzafetta completed advanced fellowship training in microsurgery and facial paralysis surgery at the Microsurgical Research Centre at Eastern Virginia Medical School in the United States. This experience shaped her long-standing clinical focus on facial nerve function and recovery.
Her training combines reconstructive precision with a detailed understanding of facial nerve anatomy, muscle behaviour and long-term adaptation following paralysis.
Research-led understanding
Research plays a central role in Ms Tzafetta’s specialist practice. During her fellowship in the United States, she received a grant from the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation to undertake laboratory and clinical research into facial paralysis and the facial nerve. This work led to a peer-reviewed publication in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Her research contributions also led to her invitation to co-author a chapter on facial reanimation in the textbook Plastic Surgery: Indications and Practice (Elsevier), reflecting recognition of her expertise within the field.
She also holds a Master of Philosophy degree from the University of Bradford, awarded for full-time research into wound healing. This academic background supports a careful, evidence-informed approach to recovery and surgical decision-making.
Experience shared through teaching and collaboration.
Ms Tzafetta regularly speaks at conferences and professional meetings, sharing her expertise in facial paralysis, facial reconstruction and wound healing. She remains actively engaged with the wider surgical and academic community.
She is a member and fellow of several professional bodies, including the Royal College of Surgeons, the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, the World Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, and the Sir Charles Bell Society for facial paralysis.
A thoughtful, individualised approach
While Ms Tzafetta’s background includes experience across a wide range of plastic and reconstructive procedures, her specialist work in facial reanimation centres on careful assessment and appropriate timing. Not every patient benefits from surgery, and not every stage of recovery calls for intervention. Guidance focuses on understanding facial function as it currently is, clarifying what improvement may still be possible, and supporting informed, unpressured decision-making.
Care remains collaborative, respectful and tailored to each individual.
Supporting the whole journey
Facial reanimation care often unfolds over time. Some people require only reassurance and guidance from physiotherapy. Others benefit from surgical support alongside rehabilitation. Many move between these stages as recovery evolves.
Ms Tzafetta’s role remains consistent throughout: to offer clarity, expertise and steady support, helping people navigate facial paralysis with confidence and realistic expectations.
